Heads up, nature lovers! If you’re planning a trip to Coed y Brenin or Bwlch Nant yr Arian, be prepared for a change. Starting from the end of this month, parking fees at these beloved forest sites in Wales are set to double with a new high-tech parking system. Say hello to automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), allowing for smooth barrier-free access, but at a new cost.

At Coed y Brenin, a favoured spot for mountain biking, the fee for all-day parking will jump from £7 to £12. The implementation begins on March 16 and becomes fully operational on March 30. Bwlch Nant yr Arian, famous for its stunning red kite feeding, will see even steeper increases—with parking going from £5 to £12 for the whole day.

These changes follow a similar pattern seen at other spots like Newborough Forest, where all-day fees rose from £7 to £15. It’s all part of a broader strategy by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to improve services and provide better surveillance at these cherished sites. The extra revenue will fund continued investment in recreational and environmental projects to enhance our experience with nature.

The new system is partnered with First Parking and RingGo, making payment straightforward via online, app, or card. A 30-minute grace period allows a little flexibility on arrival, and don’t worry—Blue Badge holders will continue to park free of charge.

If you’re a frequent visitor, consider an annual season ticket. They start at £40, granting access to both Coed y Brenin and Bwlch Nant yr Arian, with a pricier option available for Newborough too.

Important note: Overnight parking remains a no-go at all NRW locations, so plan accordingly. Let’s keep our forests beautiful and accessible for everyone!
