A 66-year-old woman is counting her blessings after a dramatic fall from Aberavon Pier left her with severe injuries, including 10 broken ribs and a ruptured spleen. On a treacherous December evening, with rain pouring and visibility at a minimum, police rushed to the scene after a concerned call alerted them to her plight.

PC Molly Cana and PC Robert Morgan arrived amidst crashing waves and slippery surfaces, desperately trying to find the woman, who had gone missing near the pier. Thanks to her quick-thinking son-in-law, who joined the search, they finally spotted her in a precarious position at the water’s edge. Her head was submerged, and her ankle was caught between rocks, trapping her dangerously close to drowning with each incoming wave.

Determined not to let her slip away, the officers swiftly called for backup and ingeniously used a rope to lasso her ankle, pulling her to safety. It was a nerve-wracking moment. “We knew we had to act fast,” says PC Cana, explaining how they lined up along the rope, praying it would hold as they heaved her up.

Once on the pier, the woman was still breathing – a relief to everyone involved. Her rescue is nothing short of a miracle, thanks to the courage and quick thinking of those officers and her family. Reflecting on the night’s events, PC Morgan admits, “It felt surreal, but I’m grateful we got her out in time.”
The heroic efforts of the police officers and the woman’s son-in-law didn’t go unnoticed, earning PC Cana and PC Morgan chief superintendent commendations. Inspector Will John praised their bravery, stating, “This rescue showcased true courage under perilous conditions.”
Port Talbot Coastguard, who’d just wrapped up a Christmas meal, quickly jumped into action, crediting the team’s bravery for saving the woman’s life. It’s remarkable teamwork and dedication that turned what could have been a tragic outcome into a testament of heroic resolve.
Let’s celebrate unsung heroes like these who remind us what true bravery looks like! 🌊🚨💪
