Following a recent outbreak of meningitis B linked to a Canterbury nightclub, urgent advice has been issued for students heading back to Wales. Tragically, two students have lost their lives, and 18 cases have been confirmed.

If you’re a student returning from the University of Kent or Canterbury Christ Church University, it’s crucial to take action now. Public Health Wales is urging anyone who stayed in campus accommodation or visited Club Chemistry on March 5, 6, or 7 to contact their GP for preventive antibiotics. An outreach programme is in motion, with students being offered antibiotics and the Meningitis B vaccine to curb the spread.

If you were born after September 2015, you might have received a jab as part of the routine immunisation schedule. However, most young people born before then aren’t protected unless they’ve been vaccinated privately. With 5,000 vaccinations aimed at University of Kent students, ensure you’re covered!

Don’t forget the signs of meningitis, which need swift attention: fever, severe headache, vomiting, stiff neck, dislike of bright lights, a non-fading rash when pressed with a glass, confusion, sleepiness, or seizures. These symptoms can worsen quickly, so early diagnosis and treatment make all the difference.
