Tragic news from Birmingham as a family faces the unimaginable loss of their 12-year-old son, Joshua Thomas. Despite Type 1 diabetes ‘running in the family’, Joshua’s condition was undiagnosed and untreated, leading to his tragic death in December 2022.

Parents Tamara and Damion Thomas, both teachers, faced trial after Joshua was found unresponsive at home. Tamara was convinced her son was merely sleeping on the sofa, unaware he had likely slipped into a diabetic coma. She was later found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter, while Damion was found guilty of child cruelty.

Joshua’s heartbreaking story unfolded over a weekend in December when he showed cold-like symptoms and was visibly unwell. He struggled to get to the bathroom due to renovations, and later collapsed. Despite Damion’s concern earlier that morning, he left for work, leaving Joshua under the care of his mum.

By mid-morning, Tamara called 999 after noticing his pale lips and faint breathing. Sadly, Joshua never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead in the early hours of the following day. His untimely death was due to severe brain damage caused by cardiac arrest, with medical experts explaining it was diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) – an urgent condition requiring immediate attention.
It’s a stark reminder of the seriousness of diabetes symptoms and the importance of prompt action. The parents are set to be sentenced on June 19. Our hearts go out to the family during this incredibly tragic time. Stay informed and take care of those you love.
