In a chilling turn of events, 18-year-old Tristan Roberts has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his mother, Angela Shellis. The tragic incident occurred last October, when Roberts led his mum to Coed y Morfa nature reserve under the guise of a night-time stroll from their home in Prestatyn.
CCTV captured the harrowing moments leading up to the crime. Angela, a beloved teaching assistant, was seen holding her son’s arm, relying on a crutch due to a recent knee injury. Once at the reserve, after crossing a railway line, Roberts ordered her to sit on a bench before attacking her with a hammer. The gruesome act was captured on a dictaphone that was later discovered by police.
The court heard Roberts, who suffers from autism, ADHD, and an “emerging personality disorder,” was influenced by fictional serial killers. Judge Rhys Rowlands described the murder as an “extremely unusual case,” not only for its brutality but because Roberts recorded it.
Details emerged of Roberts’ calculated actions following the crime, including returning to the scene when dog walkers were present. He even reportedly carried bleach in a bag, likely intending to clean up evidence. Roberts was swiftly identified and arrested within hours of Angela’s body being found, thanks to the quick work of local police and the community’s cooperation.
Senior officer DS Andrew Gibson praised Angela’s family’s bravery during the investigation. He emphasised the tragic loss of Angela, who showed immense courage during her final moments. Despite the horrific events, she remained composed, a testament to her caring nature.
