🌿 Breaking Wildlife News from Wales! 🌿

A Swansea man has made history, but not in a good way. Jarrod Hill, 59, from Pontarddulais, is the first person in Wales to be convicted under the new Agricultural (Wales) Act 2023 for setting illegal traps to capture wild animals.

It all started during a routine check at White Springs Fishery last October. Officers and Natural Resources Wales staff discovered Hill’s snares and questioned him. Turns out, he’d been warned before in 2022 about this, but back then, it was legal with restrictions.
Hill’s claim? He was trying to protect his ducks from foxes. But with the law now changed, setting these snares has become an offence, and continuing despite the law landed him in court. Hill has pled guilty and received a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
Sergeant Paul Roberts from Dyfed-Powys Police’s rural crime team made it clear: “Snares are serious threats to wildlife, causing injuries and deaths. We’re committed to protecting our wildlife and holding lawbreakers accountable.”
This case isn’t just about one man’s actions; it’s a reminder of the importance of preserving Wales’s wildlife. 🌍💚
