🎓🚫 A Tough Pill to Swallow for Welsh Midwifery Students! 🚫🎓

After three years of hard graft, student midwives in Wales have been hit with unexpected news – there’s a job shortage! Many of them took out hefty student loans, believing they’d be almost guaranteed positions post-graduation, but with NHS Wales now facing fewer openings, these soon-to-be grads are feeling frustrated and unsure about their futures.

Universities like Cardiff, Swansea, Bangor, and the University of South Wales offer midwifery degrees based on numbers provided by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW). They calculate how many midwives will be needed in three years, but the reality hasn’t met expectations this time.
HEIW recently informed students that job vacancies are scarce, a tough message from the organisation responsible for predicting NHS staffing needs. Graduate roles have been streamlined, meaning fewer posts, and application deadlines repeatedly pushed back.
Midwifery students feel let down after being reassured there would be ample job opportunities. They dedicated thousands of unpaid hours to placements in anticipation of joining the workforce. 🎓💔
Sophie Dodd and her peers, set to graduate from Swansea University, were counting on being ‘streamlined’ for jobs by HEIW. Now, they’ll have to wait until at least May to even apply. Sophie says it’s “absolutely awful” and “so stressful” to have trained for years only to face so much uncertainty.
The universities are doing what they can – Swansea University is committed to supporting its students. Yet, the situation remains complex, with NHS Wales balancing financial and operational issues while trying to retain existing staff better.
Here’s hoping for a speedy solution so these committed and passionate midwives can get the careers they’ve worked so hard for. 🤞🍼💕
