Exciting news for wildlife enthusiasts in Pembrokeshire! 🌿 A special five-metre-high tower designed to protect the declining lesser horseshoe bat species has been given the green light. This innovative structure will be part of a larger project aimed at conserving these unique creatures across Wales.

Located at Llwyngoras in Felindre Farchog, the tower is exclusively for wildlife conservation, acting as a dedicated roosting site for the bats. With bat numbers dwindling, especially in North Pembrokeshire, this project offers a much-needed haven for them to thrive. 🦇
Historically, the area harboured the only known maternity roost for the lesser horseshoe bats in the region. However, numbers have dropped, partly due to the presence of greater horseshoe bats. This new tower will offer an additional safe haven, reducing negative interactions and encouraging breeding.

This initiative is part of the “Landscape for Lessers” project spearheaded by Vincent Wildlife Trust and funded by the Nature Networks Programme. 🗺️ The project’s goal? To secure a brighter future for Wales’s lesser horseshoe bat population by enhancing and linking protected sites and creating bespoke roosts in areas where these bats face threats.
This approval marks a promising step towards facilitating the recovery of this vital species, ensuring they have the space and protection they need to recolonise and flourish across their former habitats. 🌍
Stay tuned for more updates on this and other exciting wildlife projects!
