Lee Grovell, a 56-year-old previously convicted for possessing indecent images, was caught red-handed asking for inappropriate images from someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. In reality, “Tilly” was a decoy from a group of self-proclaimed “paedophile hunters.”

Grovel struck up an online conversation with whom he thought was a young girl, unaware he was being set up. Conversations, stretching from November to early December, saw him requesting explicit images despite ‘knowing’ her age. On December 2, members of the group confronted him, streaming the interaction live on social media before police arrived.

Upon arrest, Grovell refused to provide the passcode to his phone, landing himself in further trouble as it breached an existing Sexual Harm Prevention Order issued back in 2016. With a history of failing to comply with sex offender notification requirements, his past records only worsened his current situation.

During the court hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that Grovell had been feeling isolated, contributing to his criminal behaviour, his barrister argued. Regardless, the judge wasn’t swayed, sentencing him to 32 months in prison and imposing a new, indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order alongside mandatory sex offender notification.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the internet’s dangers and the vigilante actions some take to protect vulnerable individuals. Stay safe online, everyone! 🚨🔒
