British couple Holly Cooper and Taylor Johnson, both just 20, are in hot water after being accused of trying to smuggle two suitcases packed with cannabis through Turkey. The young pair, from Wednesbury, West Midlands, were nabbed by authorities in Istanbul while on a flight from Thailand to London at the end of April. Now, they face up to 30 years in a Turkish prison if convicted.

After their arrest, the couple found themselves in an overcrowded holding cell, with reports claiming that Taylor was assaulted by fellow inmates. They’ve since been moved to another prison, but they’re stuck in limbo as it could take a year for their case to see court. Without private lawyers to lean on, Holly and Taylor are relying on a public defence team.

Back home, friends and family are scrambling to help, having launched a fundraising effort to cover legal costs. Despite the gravity of the situation, those close to them insist they’re “good kids” who got mixed up in something much bigger. A friend expressed heartbreak over the ordeal, emphasising that they were manipulated by more experienced criminals.
In the meantime, a GoFundMe page set up by Taylor’s family in an effort to gather funds for legal representation has been removed, but it initially pleaded for support, stating, “If you could just donate as little as a pound, it will all help and be very much appreciated.”
Authorities have made a stern warning to anyone tempted by criminal networks offering lavish holidays in exchange for transporting “packages.” According to Beki Wright of the National Crime Agency, the risks of being caught are high along with the hefty penalties that follow. It’s a sobering reminder that quick gains can lead to a life-altering price.
