Councillors in Pembrokeshire are calling for more protection as they tackle the “cesspit of social media” every day. Many have opened up about the abuse they’ve faced just because they dared to be vocal online or hold unique political views. Imagine being harassed for simply enjoying a coffee because someone doesn’t agree with your views!

During a recent council meeting, Fishguard North councillor, Billy Shaw, shed light on the challenges of being under the spotlight on social media. He asked if any protections could be put in place for those brave enough to step forward for public office. Alistair Cameron, another councillor, wholeheartedly agreed, highlighting the council’s duty to support those who want to stand for election. Neil Prior chimed in, mentioning that the current duty of care seems “quite woolly,” and more needs to be done to protect councillors facing challenging situations.

The discussion comes in the wake of a complaint against Billy Shaw, which was dismissed as a “waste of taxpayers’ money.” The complaint was seen as a “petty and vindictive attempt” linked to his political views and activism, including a photo taken after his first full council meeting, showing support for a campaign against companies profiting from genocide.
Why should councillors face a torrent of abuse just for trying to make a difference? It’s time to ensure they have the backing and protection they deserve to keep doing the important work for our communities—minus the social media drama.
