Thousands across Wales have spent the last three days without drinkable tap water due to a boil notice from Welsh Water, citing a “chemical issue.” Residents are growing uneasy with sparse details about the cause, while heat waves add to their woes.

Angharad Jones from Tonyrefail shared her struggle with not having enough information: “Boiling for everything – drinking, cooking, even brushing teeth – is a real pain, especially with kids and a baby at home.”

Affected areas include Rhondda Cynon Taf and surrounding regions. Welsh Water has assured that free bottled water is available at designated stations, yet many locals received no direct notification. It’s left some, like one unnamed Pontypridd resident, reliant on family and neighbours for updates.

Cars lined up under the scorching 26°C heat at distribution points as people raced to get bottled supplies for their households and elderly neighbours.

The problem stems from a fault at the Maerdy treatment works, which has since been “fixed,” but the boil notice is still in effect. Welsh Water insists it’s a precautionary step, not an issue of excess chemicals, but residents are none the less questioning safety.

The company has dedicated teams working around the clock to replace and test the water supply, aiming to ensure full compliance with quality standards before lifting the notice. But for now, waiting and boiling remain the norm.

Let’s hope Welsh Water clears this up soon! đź’§
