Newly minted Senedd Member, Cai Parry-Jones, is shaking things up with a call to Cardiff Council: it’s time to move some roads back to a 30mph speed limit. He argues the slow shift from 20mph, despite an earlier review, is leaving drivers—and residents—frustrated. As it stands, only one road has switched back, leaving Hadfield Road, Ocean Way, and Western Avenue stuck at the lower limit.

In a bold letter, Parry-Jones points out that revamping speed limits was a hot topic on the campaign trail, with voters from all walks of life eager for change. He’s not just looking at roads outside his patch; he’s got his eye on significant ones like Excalibur Drive, Caerphilly Road, and Cyncoed Road—calling for them to go under the speed-o-meter.

The Council’s review took a long hard look at 192 roads. However, with current processes, adjusting a road’s speed limit involves lengthy legal steps, often taking 12 months or more. But change is on the horizon with plans for updated signage on major roads like Ocean Way over the summer!

The debate here is simple: while 20mph can work wonders in the right areas, it might not suit all of Cardiff’s roads. Striking the right balance is key, and Parry-Jones is committed to ensuring local voices shape the city’s transport policy.
