🌟 Life is full of ups and downs, but nothing quite compares to the journey of parenting a child with Angelman syndrome. Meet Sarah Washbrook from Monmouthshire, the loving mum of six-year-old Ivor.✨

Ivor’s rare neurogenetic disorder, Angelman syndrome, affects about 1 in 15,000 people globally. It includes significant intellectual disabilities, balance and coordination challenges, and sometimes debilitating seizures. Ahead of National Carers Awareness Week, Sarah opens up about her rollercoaster days with Ivor.

Recently, a trip to the Techniquest science museum became an adventure of its own. Ivor, full of curiosity and energy, darted around with little regard for surroundings, creating moments both heartwarming and challenging. From grabbing a girl’s hair for attention because he couldn’t speak, to trying to sample food from an unsuspecting café-goer, Ivor’s actions led to a variety of emotional reactions from onlookers.
For Sarah, these experiences can be exhausting, but they also highlight the need for empathy and understanding. 💙
Despite the trials, Sarah treasures the moments of kindness and support from strangers: the comforting gesture of a café patron, the friendly morning greetings from their bus driver, and the unwavering patience of local lifeguards. These golden moments offer a lifeline when times get tough, demonstrating the power of simple human kindness. 🌈
So, next time you see a carer or someone facing a challenge, remember that your smile might just be the light they need. National Carers Awareness Week, from 8-14 June, is a reminder to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible strength and love carers provide.
