The 98-year-old café was set to be replaced with a five-storey building featuring 43 affordable flats for the over 55s. However, the local community stood strong, sending in 91 objection letters, with concerns over the size and scale of the proposed structure and potential privacy issues for neighbours. Parking woes also fuelled local opposition, with the plan proposing just 26 spaces for the 43 flats, falling short of council guidelines.

Councillor Ian Williams didn’t mince words, calling the design “absolutely hideous”. Despite council officers believing it could have added to the town’s amenities and addressed housing needs, the plan was narrowly rejected after a dramatic seven to six vote.
