Cardiff City and the football world are mourning the loss of a true legend. Richard Shepherd, affectionately known as “Shep”, passed away at the age of 81. His iconic voice and deep love for Cardiff City FC made him a household name among fans.

Shep started his journey with the Bluebirds in the early ’70s with BBC Radio Wales and became a critical part of the club’s history, eventually serving as the club historian and commentator. His rich and authoritative voice narrated some of Cardiff City’s most cherished moments, leaving a lasting legacy that supporters will never forget.

The club fondly remembered him, stating that his commentary was “the soundtrack to some of the most memorable moments” at Cardiff City. Tributes poured in from all corners, with fans and former colleagues celebrating his memory. One supporter beautifully captured the sentiment: “RIP Shep. His commentary forms the background of many of my early memories of supporting this great club.”
Another fan noted how Shep’s voice was their connection to home, saying, “Richard’s voice was at times my only way to keep updated with Cardiff City growing up away from Cardiff. For me, he was Cardiff City.”
Shep will be remembered as more than just a commentator; he was a genuine icon, a knowledgeable man of Cardiff City, and simply a top bloke. Our deepest condolences go out to his widow Brenda, family, and all who knew and admired him. Rest easy, Shep. You’ll forever echo in the hearts of Cardiff City fans.
