🛒 Supermarket Aisles Shut Down in the Heatwave! 🥵
If you’ve been shopping recently, you might have noticed some fridge aisles closed off in major supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, and Morrisons. But what gives, especially when it’s a scorcher out there?
According to Rupert Ashby from the British Frozen Food Federation, our good old fridges and freezers are struggling to keep their cool. Even with air conditioning, the extreme heat is making it tough for refrigeration systems to expel hot air effectively. Older stores, with their outdoor condenser systems, are feeling it the most. Those systems just can’t cope with the heat. Meanwhile, newer stores with plug-in units are somewhat managing since they’re expelling heat inside where it’s air-conditioned.
It’s important to note that most of these units aren’t broken but just battling inefficiency—like running on a treadmill in this heat!
This sizzling heatwave, with record-breaking temperatures reaching 36.7°C in Somerset, has everyone on high alert. Firefighters are battling wildfires, hospitals are dealing with critical incidents, and the Met Office has issued rare red weather warnings.
The heat has even interrupted schools, brought on a hosepipe ban in Kent, and disrupted transport services. Unfortunately, a tragic incident occurred where a man passed away at Aberavon Beach in Neath Port Talbot, highlighting the importance of staying safe during such relentless heat.
As we head into the weekend and gear up for the Fifa World Cup, a word to the wise: stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, and try not to exercise outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.
