As Wimbledon kicks off, with champions like Novak Djokovic and Emma Raducanu dazzling the courts, let’s shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes: the ball boys and girls! Ensuring every match runs without a hitch, these youngsters chase stray balls and keep the game flowing seamlessly.
Every year, around 280 dedicated individuals are chosen from roughly 1,400 hopefuls to become BBGs (Ball Boys and Girls). Most are aged 14-17, and their journey begins months before the tournament. From intensive speed drills to mastering court exercises, their training is no walk in the park!
So, what’s the pay for this crucial role? While they don’t receive a wage per se, they do get a stipend of about £200 for their efforts. The real reward? Being part of one of the UK’s most iconic sporting events! Plus, they enjoy complimentary meals and take home their smart Ralph Lauren kit.
Top performers might even find themselves on Centre Court, offering a front-row view of tennis history in the making. It’s a truly priceless experience for any tennis enthusiast.
