We’re saddened to share the news that revered broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan has passed away at the age of 68. A familiar face and reassuring voice, Dermot enjoyed an illustrious career over five decades with BBC, ITV and Sky News, becoming one of Britain’s most recognisable news presenters.
Dermot’s family announced that he peacefully passed at his North London home, surrounded by loved ones. He was a devoted family man, survived by his wife Maria and children Kitty, Molly, Alice, and Jack, who have expressed their gratitude to the compassionate medical teams and supporters throughout his battle with stage four prostate cancer, diagnosed just a year ago.
A fierce advocate for prostate cancer awareness, Dermot spoke candidly about his own diagnosis, urging men to prioritise their health by getting tested. “Early detection can be life-saving,” he often stressed, encouraging men over 50 and those at risk to check for signs regularly.
Beginning his television journey at Channel 4 News, Dermot later moved to ITV, lending his talents to News at Ten and ITV Evening News. At BBC, he became a household name on BBC Breakfast, BBC News at Six, and the memorable quiz show Eggheads. His tenure at Sky News from 2007 to 2023 solidified his standing as a leading news voice, where he broke major stories from around the globe.
Beyond the news desk, Dermot hosted compelling documentaries like Crimes That Shook Britain and Killer Britain. His recent podcast, Legends of News, showcased in-depth conversations with fellow journalists about monumental stories shaping our world.
In honour of Dermot’s legacy, his family kindly requests donations be made to Prostate Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer Research, and North London Hospice. A small family funeral is planned, with a memorial service at St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, later this year.
