Heartbreaking news from the world of rugby as we mourn the loss of young talent Luqobo “Bibo” Makwedini. At just 20, Bibo was a rising star with French Pro D2 side Béziers. He tragically passed away days after expressing concerns over the intense training conditions he faced in France.
Having returned to France on 3rd July after a brief stint back home in South Africa, Bibo was keen to make an impression under new coach and former Springbok, Gurthrö Steenkamp. His uncle, Mpumi Zuzile, shared his last conversation with the family where Bibo mentioned the searing heat and demanding pre-season regimen. Despite the challenges, his spirits were high, and he remained as dedicated as ever to his fitness.
Bibo’s passion for rugby was evident throughout his short but impactful career. He attended prestigious schools like Durban High School and Wynberg Boys’ High School on scholarships and represented South Africa at the under-18 level in 2024. Making a mark in the Béziers academy, he was on the brink of joining the senior squad for the upcoming season.
The loss has left a void for all who knew him. Béziers president, Bob Skinstad, praised Bibo’s commitment and warmth, emphasising how deeply he had touched the club. His former school, Wynberg Boys’ High, also penned an emotional tribute, remembering him as a beloved figure in their community.
Colleagues, fellow players, and friends are sharing their grief and memories of Bibo, highlighting his vibrant spirit and potential as a player and person. The Makwedini family is now working with the South African authorities to bring his remains home.
