Santander has made a big promise to keep its UK bank branches open until at least 2028, including the newly acquired TSB sites. This comes as a relief to many who have seen countless branches shut down over the years. Santander’s decision to keep the doors open means its combined network will boast around 480 locations across the UK.

While this is good news for customers who still value in-person banking, some argue it might come a bit too late. Sam Richardson from Which? Money mentions that past closures have already made significant impacts, with two-thirds of Santander branches shutting since 2015.
Branch closures have particularly affected the elderly and those less able to travel, making access to essential banking services harder. Though alternatives like Banking Hubs and Community Bankers are available, the push for more physical branches is strong. Campaigners are calling on the UK Government to roll out 350 new banking hubs soon and consider protecting in-person services long-term.

It’s a complicated picture, but Santander’s latest announcement signals a commitment to keeping local branches alive, reassuring many customers of their continued presence on the high street.
