Two friends from Cwmbran, Darren Silcox and Nicholas Thomas, tragically lost their lives after a devastating fall from a hotel balcony in Lanzarote. The incident occurred at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise, where a wooden handrail gave way, causing them to plunge around 20 feet after a night out.

Darren, a shopkeeper and father-of-two, died just two hours after the fall in October 2025. His friend Nicholas managed to return to the UK for treatment, but sadly passed away nearly ten months later. Spanish authorities are now investigating whether poor maintenance or lack of safety measures contributed to this heartbreaking event.

Emergency services arrived swiftly at 1:30am, confirming Darren’s death on the scene from his severe injuries. Nicholas was initially treated at a local hospital and then flown to Llandough’s University Hospital.

Inquests reveal Darren suffered from traumatic brain injury and severe skull fractures. A joint inquest into their tragic deaths is scheduled for next April to shed light on any potential negligence.
These inquests are more than just proceedings; they serve as vital tools for uncovering the truth and highlighting necessary safety improvements to prevent future tragedies.
Our hearts go out to the friends and family affected by this terrible loss. Let’s remember Darren and Nicholas and hope their story helps bring about necessary changes.
