🌧️ Fighting the Floods! 🌊

Every winter, homes and a beloved pub in Pontargothi, Carmarthenshire suffer from relentless flooding—but hope is on the horizon! 🚧✨

A groundbreaking river project could make a splash in solving this issue. Planned installation of innovative rotating sweepers upstream from the charming Pontargothi Bridge aims to steer 60-70% of debris away, reducing the risk of clogs and potentially sparing those living near the River Cothi from waterlogged woes.
Backed by local experts and Carmarthenshire Council’s planning committee, this pioneering UK project has been in the works for over five years. While not a complete cure, it’s a promising push towards a drier future for The Cresselly Arms pub and nearby homes.
However, not everyone’s on board. Concerns about effectiveness at peak flow, potential vibrations, and child safety have been raised. Local voices have also advocated for further actions like removing shale from the riverbed or an upstream barrage.
With project costs pegged at £1 million, scepticism remains among residents. Local Councillors, including Mansel Charles, argue the riverbed might hold the key to deeper issues. Meanwhile, Claire Gooding, a local, shares her struggle with flood aftermaths—lending a personal face to these efforts.
Though challenges lie ahead, Claire remains optimistic: “They’re doing something, which is great. Winter is looming—it’s in the back of my mind.” Her words and resilience remind us all of the community spirit that helps weather the storm.
As we await the project’s impact, let’s rally for Pontargothi’s brighter, drier days! 🙌💧
