🔥 Surviving the Heatwave: How Much Water Is Enough? 💧

With the mercury consistently hitting 30°C and above, staying hydrated has never been more crucial! As the UK swelters under its fourth heatwave this year, experts are weighing in on just how much water we should be drinking. So, what’s the magic number? 🚰

Dr Nikki Ramskill suggests upping the usual two litres to between 2.5 and three litres during these scorching temps. The key? Listen to your body! If your urine is dark or your skin starts feeling dry, it’s time to drink up. And remember, hydration doesn’t have to come solely from water. Think coconut water, sugar-free squash, ice lollies – even water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber! 🍉🥒

Phil Evans, a physiotherapist, recommends sipping liquids consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re parched. Dehydration can hit your joints before you even feel thirsty, so be proactive! Try to stick to pale straw-coloured urine as a guideline.
Nutritional biochemist Jamie Christie echoes these tips, adding that active individuals or those who sweat a lot might need even more. Small, frequent sips throughout the day are much more effective than downing a bottle in one go.
Lastly, Natalie Rouse advises front-loading your hydration in the morning. A 300ml to 700ml increase in water intake could be necessary when things really heat up. The NHS also suggests staying in the shade during peak sun hours, applying sunscreen, and avoiding activities or beverages that increase body heat.
In short, to beat the heat, keep that water bottle handy, and replace your usual cuppa with a chilled drink. Cheers to staying cool and hydrated! 🥤☀️
