In the space of just 24 hours, two well-established businesses in the Vale of Glamorgan were subjected to separate break-ins, leaving shocked owners counting the cost of theft and property damage. The incidents, both under active investigation by South Wales Police, have raised concerns among the local business community over a perceived increase in targeted crime.

The first burglary struck The Bike Shop Wales, a respected independent retailer located in Penarth, which has served cycling enthusiasts in the area for more than a decade. During the early hours of 19 May, intruders forced their way into the premises, reportedly after making several determined attempts to smash the reinforced front door. Undeterred even when challenged by alarmed neighbours, the burglars ultimately gained access, focusing their efforts on a high-value electric mountain bike — an uncommon model worth over £2,700.

A representative from The Bike Shop Wales described the ordeal as “a sad day” for the business. “As an independent shop, losing a specialist bike isn’t just a financial blow, but an emotional one too. These perpetrators were brazen and didn’t seem the least bit concerned about being confronted. There have been similar incidents in the area lately and we sincerely hope those responsible are caught soon,” they commented.

Despite the blow to their stock, the response from the local community has been heartening. The shop owner shared that outpourings of concern and offers of assistance from customers, fellow businesses, and the wider cycling community have helped offset some of the emotional impact of the burglary. “It’s frustrating, but the support we’ve received is a real reminder of the strength of our community ties,” they added.

However, the crime wave continued just a day later. On 20 May, Refresh Café at Cosmeston Country Park, less than ten minutes’ drive from Penarth, also fell victim to a late-night raid. Evidence suggests the thief or thieves accessed the premises by forcing through the roof, leading to considerable structural damage in addition to the theft of stock and donations. Particularly disheartening for staff, a charity collection box meant for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Wish Upon a Star charity was among the items stolen.

Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Bronwen Brooks, expressed her frustration at yet another case of local vandalism and theft. “We are deeply disappointed to report the break-in at Cosmeston Country Park’s café,” she stated. “Our staff work tirelessly to care for our country parks and certainly do not deserve to see their efforts undone by mindless acts like these. We urge anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue alongside South Wales Police.”

Since the incident, emergency repairs have been carried out on the damaged roof to make the premises safe, though full restoration remains ongoing. The council apologised to café visitors for any temporary disruption and praised the prompt response of local authorities and maintenance teams.

South Wales Police have confirmed that they are pursuing both cases vigorously, with separate appeals for information in circulation. A spokesperson for the force noted, “We understand how distressing burglary is, whether it affects your home, business, or workplace. We would urge business owners to review their security arrangements and to ensure that no cash is left on site overnight.”

The police further encouraged the public to remain alert, especially to any suspicious activity around shops or retail units during the early hours. “If anyone observes unusual behaviour or persons loitering near premises, we urge you to contact us immediately via 999,” the spokesperson added.

These two incidents have served as a stark warning to local business owners about the necessity of robust security protocols, as well as the value of community vigilance. Both The Bike Shop Wales and Refresh Café are gradually resuming normal operations, buoyed by the resilience and support of their customers.

Authorities continue to appeal for anyone who may have seen or heard anything around Glebe Street in Penarth on the night of 19 May, or near Cosmeston Country Park on 20 May, to come forward.
