**Former Arsenal Keeper Warned of Championship Rigours as Wrexham Aim High**

As Wrexham AFC prepares to make its much-anticipated return to the Championship after more than four decades away, a candid warning has arrived from the highest level. Arsenal’s current number one, David Raya, has spoken out about the formidable challenge awaiting both Wrexham and their former Gunner goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo.

Okonkwo, who came up through the ranks at Arsenal, earned his stripes with loan spells at Crewe Alexandra in League Two and Austria’s Sturm Graz before making his mark at Wrexham. His initial loan move in 2023 quickly transformed into a permanent deal, with the 23-year-old playing a pivotal role in securing back-to-back promotions for the North Wales side owned by Hollywood luminaries Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. With 19 clean sheets last season, Okonkwo’s impact between the posts has not gone unnoticed.
However, the mood ahead of next season is tinged with caution. David Raya, a Spaniard well-versed in the rigours of England’s second tier following spells with Blackburn Rovers and Brentford, says the Championship offers an entirely different test for goalkeepers—one that, in his view, surpasses even the Premier League for sheer physicality and relentlessness.
Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, hosted by former Wrexham and Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster, Raya opened up about the challenges: “It’s so much different in the Championship. You just get kicked everywhere—every throw-in is a melee in the box, with giants crashing in on you. While the Premier League might have more technical quality, the physical toll and hectic schedule in the Championship makes it, for me, the harder league to survive as a keeper.”
Foster, who himself helped guide Wrexham out of the National League during a previous stint, readily agreed with Raya’s assessment. He went so far as to suggest that some elite Premier League goalkeepers would struggle with the demanding and combative nature of the lower leagues. “You need to be made of sterner stuff, physically and mentally. There are Championship keepers who, frankly, might not cut it in the Premier League, and vice versa—the intensity is a different beast altogether,” said Foster.
Wrexham’s resurgence has captivated football fans well beyond the UK, helped significantly by the popularity of the Disney+ documentary “Welcome to Wrexham”. The club’s consecutive promotions, driven by spectacular support from around the globe, have turned Okonkwo and his teammates into household names. Despite all this success, Okonkwo has admitted that his move to North Wales initially required a leap of faith.
Reflecting on his journey while speaking to US television show Amanpour and Company, Okonkwo recalled: “When my agents first mentioned Wrexham, I had to google where it was, honestly. I only knew bits about the club and the fact they played in the EFL. It didn’t seem real at first—especially with such famous owners reaching out.” Yet, Okonkwo has found the transition rewarding, emphasising how welcomed he has felt by both the players and supporters.
Wrexham’s remarkable rise is now poised at a crucial juncture. With Okonkwo now a permanent fixture at the club and its star continuing to rise thanks to off-field attention and on-field success, both fans and pundits will be keenly watching how the club adapts to the notoriously demanding schedule of the Championship.
For Okonkwo, the next campaign is set to test his mettle. He has proven his talent in League Two and League One, but, as both Raya and Foster highlight, the step up will require resilience, adaptability, and an unshakeable sense of self-belief. The goalkeeping fraternity appears united in agreeing that the Championship takes no prisoners—making Okonkwo’s next chapter one of the most intriguing stories for Wrexham’s coming season.
Fans of the Dragons, newly acquainted or otherwise, will be hoping that Okonkwo’s journey in the EFL so far will stand him in good stead. As Wrexham prepares for intense fixture lists and the unique challenges only the Championship can bring, only time will tell whether Hollywood’s football fairy-tale can continue apace.
