Most of us have heard the old adage that a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away. However, experts from top universities including Oxford and Cambridge say their findings suggest otherwise. They’ve discovered that non-drinkers and those consuming 40+ drinks weekly have a 41% higher chance of developing dementia than light drinkers who have fewer than seven drinks a week. And for those who are alcohol-dependent? The risk soars to 51%!

Digging deeper, genetic analysis revealed a higher genetic risk for all types of drinking – from self-reported sips to more risky, dependent behaviours – was linked with an increased risk of dementia. 🧠

Dr Anya Topiwala, from Oxford Population Health, highlights, β€œOur findings challenge the common belief that low levels of alcohol are beneficial for brain health. Genetic evidence suggests otherwise.” Meanwhile, Dr Joel Gelernter from Yale adds that it’s high time we rethink the alleged benefits of light drinking.

Currently, around 982,000 people in the UK live with dementia, a figure projected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. With no current NHS treatments to halt dementia’s progress, reducing alcohol intake could be a key preventive measure.

This study underscores the urgent need to reevaluate our drinking habits for the sake of long-term brain health. 🍺🚫 So, is it time to rethink that daily glass of wine? Feel free to share your thoughts below! πŸ’¬
