Did you know that every time you sort out your recycling, you’re actually helping your local council earn some serious cash? In Swansea, for example, the council pocketed a whopping £4.46 million last financial year by selling off your discarded cans, glass, paper, and plastic. Now that’s rubbish turned into gold!

Even though we might not see a council tax rebate from this, the income plays a crucial role in supporting vital services. This includes covering some of the costs associated with waste collections, maintaining a reliable fleet of modern vehicles, and employing the hardworking folks who collect our bins. Quality is key! The better we separate our recyclables, the more valuable the materials become.

The Swansea Council oversees about 70,000 tonnes of recyclable waste each year, half of which is sold to recycling companies who transform it into products for resale. This keeps the recycling loop going and is a far cry from the old days of simply dumping waste in landfills.
In 2024-25 alone, Swansea’s efforts saw 70.4% of municipal waste recycled, composted, or reused – outperforming the Welsh average of 66.6%. Metals brought in £727,944, while paper and cardboard generated £405,098. Not bad for items most of us often overlook!
While recycling generates a nice chunk of change, the council still faces expenses such as disposing of food and garden waste, and buying new equipment to ensure timely collections.
So, the next time you sort your recycling, remember you’re playing a part in this vital and rewarding cycle. By doing your bit, you’re not just helping the planet but supporting invaluable community services too. Here’s to making every recycled item count! 🌍♻️
