🏉 Big news in the world of Welsh rugby! Newport councillors are rallying against the Welsh Rugby Union’s (WRU) controversial plans to cut Wales’ four rugby regions down to just two. Newport’s heart and heritage might be at risk as the Dragons RFC face an uncertain future. Local leaders are passionately voicing their concerns, calling the move a “massive blow” to the city. They stress how deeply intertwined the Dragons are with the community’s social fabric. 🙌
Council leader Cllr Dimitri Batrouni highlighted the club’s essential role, praising its impact both on and off the field. Echoing this, Cllr Matthew Evans, a long-time season ticket holder, labelled the proposals “diabolical”, warning that losing the Dragons would mean a loss of regional pride and passion. 🏟️
Imagine Newport without the roar at Rodney Parade – 50,000 fans visited last year alone! Cllr James Clarke warns of the potential economic hit and insists on preserving the city’s vibrant rugby culture. Meanwhile, Cllr Laura Lacey warns that losing the Dragons’ community initiatives could rob a generation of transformative experiences.
In other news, rising Welsh rugby star Max Llewellyn is gearing up to make a mark in a new era under coach Steve Tandy. The Gloucester centre is all set for the Premiership opener against Sale, eager to make a statement after missing out on the summer tour due to injury. Llewellyn is thrilled to showcase his physical prowess and seize the opportunities that come his way in an expansive team like Gloucester.
As if that’s not enough, Canada’s women’s rugby team is innovating ahead of their World Cup final against England! They’ve been training with headphones to acclimate to the roaring crowd – a record-breaking 82,000 fans are expected.
