A shocking twist turned a mum’s measles scare into a life-altering journey for her young daughter. Little Aubrey’s leg pain and suspicious spots led mum Madeleine to think it was just growing pains or maybe even measles. But when Aubrey suddenly began vomiting blood, the reality was far more serious: acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a rare type of blood cancer.

Living in Essex, Madeleine, 28, and her partner James, 31, were plunged into a whirlwind as their brave kiddo was rushed to Broomfield Hospital and then to London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital. In the months that followed, Aubrey, just six, faced intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments and has been away from school far too long. Yet, she remains hopeful and eager to see her friends again.
Madeleine has her own history with Great Ormond Street Hospital, having been treated there as a baby. She credits the dedicated teams at both hospitals for saving Aubrey’s life, saying, “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for GOSH… and Aubrey wouldn’t be here without GOSH.”

Parents everywhere can feel Madeleine’s raw plea: if your child shows unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek help. “It doesn’t feel real,” Madeleine admits, adding that it’s not something anyone imagines could happen to their family. Now, she’s on a mission to raise awareness about ALL and the incredible medical teams fighting these battles.
Despite the hurdles, Aubrey’s spirit shines. The “sassy” six-year-old dreams of becoming a scientist, and she’s ready to leap back into her studies and beloved school life. Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the crucial roles played by life-saving institutions and family support.
