🚗🦮 Struggling to navigate Brecon due to pavement parking, blind resident Nick Lancaster is speaking out! Dependable on his guide dog Benje, Nick frequently finds himself stepping into the road because cars block the pavements, leaving him frustrated and potentially in danger.

Unlike some areas in the UK, Wales doesn’t currently have a blanket ban on pavement parking unless specific signage is displayed. This loophole means that for people like Nick, routine tasks become a challenge, sometimes resulting in missed appointments and making parts of town no-go zones. “It’s stressful and sometimes I just have to turn back and head home,” Nick laments.

Guide Dogs UK is urging the Welsh Government to act swiftly, pushing for legislation similar to what’s in place in Scotland and London. They argue that clearer laws will ensure safer streets for all pedestrians, especially those with visual impairments. A survey by YouGov highlighted significant support for new legislation, with 74% of councillors in favour. 🚶♂️🚦
Transport Secretary Ken Skates acknowledges the problem and says the government is working to make streets safer by collaborating with councils and investing in better infrastructure like dropped kerbs. But for now, the challenge persists. 🌍
