Exciting news for horse lovers in Carmarthenshire! 🐎 The council is taking big strides to make our beautiful countryside more accessible for equestrians. They’ve just approved a pioneering equestrian strategy aimed at creating more off-road routes, ensuring safer and more enjoyable rides for all.

After listening to over 500 local voices, it’s clear that more off-road options are needed. Currently, less than 10% of the county’s public rights of way are open to horse riders, which falls short compared to neighbouring areas. The strategy aims to change that with 16 action points designed to enhance and expand riding opportunities.

Jane Langley, who co-runs Westwood Equestrian Centre near Ammanford, couldn’t be more thrilled: “More bridleways are exactly what we need. Riding on roads is dangerous and stressful for everyone involved.”

Plans include improving existing routes, upgrading footpaths to bridleways, and even forming a volunteer team to maintain these pathways. Plus, the council is keen to hear from horse riders in next year’s Active Travel network map consultation.
This initiative not only focuses on safety and connectivity but also recognises the significance of horses in the rural identity of Carmarthenshire. With equestrian-related spending in the area surpassing £46 million annually, these efforts are set to strengthen community ties and economic growth.
While budget considerations remain, the council is prioritising these measures to make Carmarthenshire a more horse-friendly county.
Bridle up, Carmarthenshire riders! Your scenic, safer, and more horse-inclusive countryside awaits. 🌿🐴
