Shocking oversight at a youth club in Porthcawl has everyone talking. A woman under investigation for a serious crime was allowed to work at a local after-school club – and it turns out, she’s the daughter of one of the directors! Sarah Vigus, also known as Sarah Parkinson, was under investigation for raping a 17-year-old when she got a job at YMCA Porthcawl. She was later sentenced to over eight years in prison after being found guilty of rape and assault.

Here’s where it gets even more complicated: the hiring happened *after* the club was given a DBS certificate detailing the charges. Yet, the charity says they weren’t aware until Vigus stopped showing up for work. The fault, they now admit, lay in not following safeguarding rules properly. The person overseeing her DBS check has resigned, and the charity has confirmed it wasn’t Vigus’ mum, who has also stepped down to avoid any perceived conflicts of interest.

The Charity Commission is looking into the situation, and Wales’ Children’s Commissioner is urging for stronger child protection measures across organisations. This should never have happened, and it’s prompted calls for more independent oversight to prevent such lapses.
YMCA admits this is a major fail in safeguarding, richocheting concern throughout the community. They’re reviewing their procedures to ensure nothing like this happens again. Families with kids at the club are understandably upset and demand accountability.
This incident shows the critical need for tighter checks in places meant to protect and nurture our young ones. Safeguarding cannot be just a tick-box exercise. What’s your take on this shocking lapse? Let us know.
