A significant gathering is set to take place in Trafalgar Square this Sunday as the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BDBJ) commemorates the two-year anniversary of the tragic Hamas attacks on Israel. This event is being organised just a day after nearly 500 individuals were detained during pro-Palestine protests in London.

As the anniversary of the October 7th attacks looms, key figures including Sharone Lifschitz, Adam Ma’anit, and Shaun Lemel are scheduled to speak, sharing personal stories and insights. Former hostage Emily Damari will join via video. Tensions are high after Saturday’s protests, where the Metropolitan Police made a total of 492 arrests for various offences, including support for the proscribed group, Palestine Action.

The BDBJ is calling for those detained under the Terrorism Act to face further investigation, denouncing the protests as “an affront to public decency.” Meanwhile, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope for the release of remaining hostages from Gaza in the coming days, coinciding with upcoming peace discussions in Egypt.
Silent vigils led by Defend Our Juries and Greater Manchester Friends of Palestine unfolded in London and Manchester, remembering Palestinian lives lost amidst the ongoing conflict. However, the scale of these events prompted concerns, with London police chief Sir Mark Rowley emphasising the strain on resources during such mass assemblies.
Protection measures have been heightened, with additional officers deployed to synagogues and Jewish institutions following recent events. As emotions run high, communities are urged to respect the sensitivity of the current climate. Let’s continue to engage in thoughtful and respectful dialogues, ensuring peace and remembrance remain central.
