🌊 Dramatic Rescue on Porthcawl Beach! 🌊

Surfer Ben Fraser’s day on the waves took a sudden turn when he got caught in a powerful rip current at Rest Bay. Despite having 15 years of surfing under his belt, the pull of the tide was stronger than expected. As he drifted further south towards Hutchwns Point, he made a desperate wave to a passing dog walker—and it was a lifesaving move.

The quick-thinking dog walker dialled 999, alerting the Coastguard and mobilising the Porthcawl RNLI crew. Volunteer rescuers, already on hand for a training session, sprang into action and launched the Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires. Battling gusty winds and choppy seas, they reached Ben just in time.

Helm Gareth Collins recounted, “We spotted Ben off Hutchwns Point. Despite the conditions, we managed to bring him onboard swiftly. He remained calm and did the right thing by staying clear of the rocks.”
Ben was grateful for the swift response and shared his gratitude: “A huge thank you to the lady who called 999—her quick thinking got me rescued safely. The RNLI crew were amazing.”
This incident is a timely reminder of the power of community and the bravery of the RNLI volunteers who put themselves at risk to save others. Stay safe and be aware of the sea’s unpredictable nature!
Here’s wishing Ben a safe and thrilling autumn on the waves! 🌊🤙
