And there’s more! Monty shares that for roses that have gone a bit leggy or are showing their age, a more detailed cut with secateurs in February will help rejuvenate them by removing old growth. For those with climbing roses, autumn or late winter is the perfect time to cut back to a strong framework, from which beautiful side shoots will bloom.

Not sure if your roses flower on new or old growth? Identifying this is crucial for setting up your pruning regime! Rambling roses bloom on old wood, so avoid a hard prune in February if you want summer flowers. On the other hand, shrub, hybrid tea, climbing, and floribunda roses bloom on new growth, so a hard prune in March can set the stage for a vibrant summer display.

🌱 Lawn Care Alert! 🌱

As the chilly months roll in, Monty advises keeping up with the lawn care for as long as the grass continues to grow. It’s better to leave the grass slightly longer during winter—around 2.3 to 3 inches—to protect against the cold and prevent snow mould and root damage.

So, grab a rake and clear out any thatch or moss to keep your lawn breathing easy!
