After more than a decade, the residents of Caerau, Bridgend, are finally seeing the light at the end of a long tunnel. Ten years after faulty insulation wreaked havoc on their homes, repairs are at last underway. A whopping 100 properties were affected by dodgy insulation work carried out under two energy-saving schemes between 2012 and 2013. The aftermath? Damp, mould, and crumbling walls – absolute nightmare!

Fast forward to 2022, and a Welsh Government grant, along with funds from the Bridgend County Borough Council, sparked hope for these resilient residents. Repairs kicked off, with one home fully restored and the rest slated for completion by March 2026.

In a recent council meeting, Cllr Ian Williams requested insight into the pace of the repairs and the project’s whopping £4 million budget. Though his request to access unredacted internal audits was denied, officials assure that significant progress is being made.

Step by step, old insulation is out and new, high-standard materials are in. Yet, as the final phase rolls out, some unresolved concerns linger. Cllr John Spanswick, council leader, empathises, acknowledging the hardships faced by residents over the past decade. He noted, “We are doing our best to put things back,” while recognising not all internal repairs will be covered.
