🚨 Attention all pensioners! If you were born on or before 22 September 1960, there’s an important update from the DWP you shouldn’t miss. They’re urging you to review your finances before the fast-approaching September deadline. Missing this could lead to an unexpected tax bill!

If you’re earning over £35,000 annually, the Winter Fuel Payment might land in your account, only to be clawed back by HMRC later through the tax system. But don’t panic—if you prefer not to receive it at all, you’ve got options:
1️⃣ Fill out the online opt-out form by 11:59pm on 20 September 2026.
2️⃣ Call the Winter Fuel Payment helpline by 6pm on 18 September 2026.

Keep your National Insurance number handy when making the request. And remember, you can’t return the money yourself—HMRC will handle it for you if you’re above the income threshold.
Deciding to opt out will carry over to future years unless you choose to opt back in. To start receiving payments again, notify the DWP by 31 March 2027 for the 2026-27 winter payment.
Keep your personal details up to date—any changes like moving house or entering care should be reported ASAP to avoid overpayments.
There’s been a lot of chatter since Chancellor Rachel Reeves made waves by limiting payments in 2024, then reversed this decision. The result? All pensioners above the state pension age in England and Wales can receive Winter Fuel Payments without needing to qualify for benefits. However, the income rule still applies – those earning over £35,000 annually will see the payment taxed back.
Stay informed and avoid surprises, folks! Check if these changes affect you and take action before it’s too late. For more info, reach out to the Winter Fuel Payment Centre at 0800 731 0160, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. 📞
