**Michael Sheen Pays Tribute to Late Father and Highlights Vital Work of Local Dementia Group**

Welsh actor Michael Sheen has issued a heartfelt tribute following the recent passing of his father, Meyrick Sheen, who died earlier this month. The star, known for his roles on stage and screen, turned to social media to express his gratitude towards a Port Talbot community group that brought solace and support to his parents during challenging times.

Sheen’s message was notably tinged with emotion as he described the comfort and happiness offered by the Sunflower Café, a dementia support initiative situated in Taibach, Port Talbot. The actor has long been open about his strong community ties and, following his father’s death, has used his platform to raise awareness and support for the group that meant so much to his family.
The Sunflower Café was established in October 2022 as a safe place for residents living with dementia and their loved ones. Both Meyrick and his wife, Irene, were among the founding attendees and became beloved participants in the weekly gatherings. Sheen reflected on their involvement, recalling how his parents cherished the camaraderie and activities the group offered.
“Sheen shared through his social media platform that the café ‘gave my Dad & Mum some much appreciated joy and support in the last years of his life’,” the actor wrote, underlining the impact that community-led efforts can have on families affected by dementia. He praised the dedication of the café, remarking that “they do so much with so little to help those living with Dementia,” and encouraged donations in his father’s memory to sustain their work.
The Sunflower Café, in a statement honouring Meyrick, described him as an ever-cheerful presence. “Meyrick and his lovely wife Irene attended the very first meeting and became hugely valued regulars, enjoying the warmth, support, friendship and community we offer each Tuesday afternoon,” organisers said. Meyrick, they added, was always ready to join in—whether it was light exercise, taking part in art sessions, or joining a singalong with the ukulele band.
Since the group operates on modest resources, donations in Meyrick’s memory will go directly towards vital running costs, including rent and refreshments. The café is determined that these contributions will help them continue providing essential companionship and assistance to families in the Port Talbot area facing the daily realities of dementia.
Earlier in the month, Sheen had confirmed the personal loss on social media, posting, “On behalf of my family it is with heartbreaking sadness that I mark the passing of my beautiful father Meyrick Sheen today. We were with him throughout. There will never be anyone like him. RIP Meyrick Sheen (1940 – 2025).” The news was met with a flood of condolences from fans and fellow actors, many of whom acknowledged the profound influence Meyrick had on Michael’s life.
Meyrick Sheen spent much of his career as a personnel manager with the British Steel Corporation, and it was in Port Talbot that he, alongside wife Irene, raised Michael and his sister Joanne. The town and its close-knit nature have continued to shape the actor’s values and charitable outlook.
Sheen’s public appeal draws attention not only to the memory of his father but also highlights the invaluable contributions of small charities within communities across Wales and beyond. The story underscores how local initiatives, often overlooked, play a crucial role in improving day-to-day lives.
At a time when support services across the UK are under growing strain, Sheen’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of collective action. His call for donations in lieu of traditional condolences signals an enduring commitment to improving conditions for families affected by dementia, passing on the warmth and solidarity his own parents once received.
