Acclaimed British actor Stephen Graham has hinted that there could be more to come from the Netflix drama ‘Adolescence’, leaving fans speculating about a potential second series. While nothing has yet been confirmed, Graham’s comments have stirred fresh excitement among audiences who were gripped by the show’s intense narrative earlier this year.

At 51, Graham has become known for his compelling performances and his commitment to bringing authenticity to the screen. In ‘Adolescence’, not only did he star, but he also played a significant role behind the scenes as co-writer. The series made waves for its exploration of the harrowing case of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old accused of murdering a classmate, Katie Leonard. Owen Cooper and Emilia Holliday were lauded for their performances as Jamie and Katie, respectively.

Speaking with Variety, Graham addressed the possibility of a follow-up series: “It still is a possibility… If we were to go again, would I like it to again? With a different story completely? Yes.” This comment suggests that, if the series returns, it will likely delve into new territory rather than simply continuing the original storyline. Such an approach would allow for the exploration of different social issues, maintaining the drama’s distinct perspective.

Interestingly, Graham revealed the creative direction he and co-writer Jack Thorne chose to take. Rather than telling the story from the viewpoint of the victim’s family, which he described as a more ‘conventional’ path, they instead shone a light on a less commonly explored perspective. Graham explained, “If we were a conventional drama, you would look at it from Katie’s perspective and we’d see the aftermath of Katie’s family. But I felt like we’d have seen that. We’ve seen that many a time. We haven’t really seen this side.”

This decision appears to have paid off. ‘Adolescence’ achieved a remarkable feat, topping Netflix viewing charts in 93 countries and capturing the attention of a global audience. Graham expressed his astonishment at the series’ performance, noting, “It was always made very intently as a little British story, and I think that was the beauty of it.” He went on to reflect on the unexpected reach of the drama, saying, “We didn’t expect it to transcend the way it did, but we were very true. I think it was because it was made with truth and integrity and respect and a lot of love.”

He continued, “I think that transcended it. (It was) once in a lifetime. We tapped straight into the zeitgeist. You’ve just had something that’s gone everywhere. I mean, No. 1 in Brazil? No. 1 in Saudi Arabia?” The overwhelming international reception has been one of the talking points following the series’ release.

Behind the scenes, the sense of surprise was shared by others involved in the project. Hannah Walters, Graham’s wife and an executive producer on the show, echoed his sentiments in an interview given in March. She recounted receiving messages from seasoned industry professionals who were equally stunned by the series’ influence. “Somebody sent us an email saying that he’d been in the business for 38 years and had never known anything to have had an impact like that,” Walters recalled.

The sheer scale of the drama’s influence was reflected in its chart-topping status in diverse regions around the world. Walters remarked, “We’re number one in 80 countries, including Saudi Arabia, India, Australia… it’s just incredible. I didn’t think the subject matter would resonate with the world, but it really has.”

The response to ‘Adolescence’ appears to underscore a growing appetite for British dramas that offer gritty realism and challenge conventional narratives. With neither Graham nor the rest of the creative team ruling out a return, the future of the series remains an open question. What’s clear, however, is that ‘Adolescence’ has struck a chord far beyond its creators’ expectations, leaving a lasting impression on global audiences.

As fans wait for news about the show’s potential return, the phenomenon of ‘Adolescence’ serves as a testament to the power of original storytelling, and to the ability of UK drama to resonate on a truly international stage.
