On a typical Sunday morning adventure in the stunning Glyderau range, two hikers took a wrong turn while descending Tryfan’s notorious north ridge. Their misstep led them into a treacherous gully, mistakenly thought to be the way down. The situation took a serious turn when one of them slipped, plummeting 10 metres and sustaining leg and ankle injuries. Unable to move and with his buddy stuck, it was clear they needed urgent help.

The incredible team from Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO) quickly sprang into action. With two “hasty parties” on the scene, one focused on reaching and treating the injured walker, while the other aimed to rescue the stranded hiker. As the skies darkened and the wind howled, even the mighty Rescue 936 chopper couldn’t navigate the worsening weather to perform an aerial rescue.

Never ones to back down from a challenge, the OVMRO volunteers resorted to a complex technical rope operation to bring the injured man safely down. After seven intense hours of effort, they succeeded in their mission, lowering him through an intricate series of manoeuvres. By late afternoon, he was handed over to the Welsh Ambulance Service, marking the end of a long, suspenseful day.

Huge respect to the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue heroes who worked tirelessly to ensure these adventurers got the help they needed amidst challenging conditions. Let this be a reminder to always stay vigilant when hiking the beautiful, yet unpredictable Welsh mountains!
