π Struggling to catch those elusive Z’s? You’re not alone! Millions of us know the frustration of staring at the ceiling into the early hours. But here’s a bedtime hack that finally worked for me: cognitive shuffling! π΄β¨

This nifty trick was suggested by Dr Amir Khan. Essentially, itβs like counting sheep but with a twist. Instead of numbers, think of a word, and for each letter, come up with another word that starts with that letter. Visualise each word as you go. For example, using the word “bed,” you might visualize a “ball,” “beach,” or “biscuit.”

On a particularly sleepless night, I opted for “basketball.” So began my mental adventure with words starting with “B” – “ball,” “bed,” and even “bologna!” Before I knew it, I was moving onto “A” with “ants,” “Australia,” and more… but then, magically, I drifted off. π€
Cognitive shuffling tricks your brain into thinking dream-like thoughts, helping to quiet that racing mind. Perfect for those nights when your thoughts just won’t shut off!
Developed by researcher Luc P. Beaudoin, this technique draws on the idea of distracting from sleep-preventing thoughts like worrying or planning, by replacing them with random, unconnected imagery. π
So, if you’re wrestling with insomnia and standard advice isn’t cutting it, give cognitive shuffling a whirl. And remember, if you consistently struggle to sleep, it’s always wise to check in with your GP. π€
Sweet dreams, everyone! ππ
