Earlier this year, waiting times skyrocketed to a whopping 22 weeks. Contributing to the chaos are third-party bot bookings, a shortage of examiners, and a significant staff turnover, reportedly linked to pay and safety concerns.

Some keen drivers are coughing up as much as £500 to snag a test date through third-party sites—a sign of just how desperate the situation has become. In a bid to speed things up, the government has roped in military driving examiners to roll out an extra 6,500 tests. Yet, with around 1.1 million people stuck in the backlog, it seems there’s still a long road ahead.

The National Audit Office highlights the shortfall in examiner numbers, stating they’ve only increased by 83 since 2021, far from the target of 400. Their head, Gareth Davies, stresses the need for serious action to fix a system that’s letting learners down.

Let’s hope for some swift solutions, so learner drivers can hit the road sooner rather than later! 🚦
