Approval Granted for Demolition of Historic Community Center in Suburban Area

Another piece of Cardiff’s community history is about to vanish, as plans have been approved to demolish the former Salvation Army centre on Walker Road, Splott. This move is part of a broader initiative to bring more affordable housing to the area, marking the second community building to face the wrecking ball after The New Fleurs Sports and Social Club was demolished in 2024.

The council had earlier put a pause on the demolition due to community concerns about noise and vibrations, but those plans are now back on track. Worry not, though—a nearby Salvation Army centre on East Moors Road is ready to pick up the slack, continuing its community services just a short walk away.

Demolition work is scheduled for weekdays between 8am and 5:30pm. Noisy work outside of these hours will need special approval, with measures in place to minimise disturbance, like correctly silenced machinery and acoustic screening where needed.

The Cardiff Community Housing Association is steering this project, seeing the site as a perfect fit for new social housing given its proximity to local amenities and public transport. The spot is prime real estate, nestled within a bustling residential area surrounded by classic two-storey terraced homes.

During construction, the space from the demolished New Fleurs nightclub will double as a temporary car park, smoothing out logistics for the whole operation.

The Salvation Army first acquired the building in 1983, using it for a variety of community and religious services. It’s an end of an era, but hopefully, this change will usher in positive developments for Splott and its residents! 🌆🏘️ #CardiffCommunity #SplottTransformation #AffordableHousing
