In a shocking incident in Cardiff city centre, Martin Hewings, 51, launched a brutal attack on a homeless man with a broken vodka bottle. After an argument erupted on St Mary Street, Hewings smashed the bottle on the victim’s head before using it as a weapon, leaving the man with gruesome injuries, including deep cuts and fractures to his jaw, nose, and eye socket. The vicious assault, which was caught on CCTV, resulted in permanent scarring for the victim.

During the sentencing at Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Hewings had a history of violence, with previous convictions for battery and assault. Prosecutors highlighted the severity of his actions, describing the incident as a “frenzied attack”. Despite Hewings’ plea of guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, the court heard he’s trying to turn his life around, participating in rehabilitation programmes and working while in custody.
Judge Daniel Williams did not mince words, labelling the attack as a “disgraceful incident” before sentencing Hewings to four years and six months in prison. Hewings was also handed an eight-year restraining order. This shocking case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of violence and the lasting impact it can have on victims. Stay safe and take care out there.
