A solicitor is on trial at Bristol Crown Court facing serious accusations of drug-related offences. Ben Garvey, 38, from Port Talbot, is accused of being involved in the supply of cocaine and steroids. He’s also alleged to have perverted the course of justice by facilitating messages related to drug dealing from his client to others while in custody.

The prosecution paints a picture of a WhatsApp group chat bustling with shocking exchanges, with pictures of drugs laid out on scales and memes joking about turning energy drinks into cocaine. It’s alleged that Garvey participated in these conversations, possibly encouraging others to use drugs.

Garvey defends himself by describing the period as “the worst time” of his life. He shared with the court that during 2020 and 2021, he and his wife faced considerable struggles, including the aftermath of their daughter’s birth and the tragic loss of his father-in-law. Garvey insists his comments in the group were merely stupid banter exaggerated by the stress and grief he was enduring. “It was just joining in with a stupid conversation,” he stated, adding that many messages he hadn’t even seen.
While Garvey remains firm on his innocence, his alleged connections raise eyebrows, especially as his co-defendants face similar scrutiny. The trial continues, with more revelations expected. Amidst all this, Garvey’s stance is clear: these exchanges were never meant to be serious, claiming, “It’s a WhatsApp group where the conversations are not meant to be taken seriously.”
