Tragic Mystery in Cardiff: Andrew Pothan Found in River

Andrew Pothan, 54, vanished after stepping out of his Old St Mellons home late one evening in March last year. Seventeen days later, his body was tragically discovered in the River Rhymney, just a short distance from where he lived. Despite an inquest, the exact circumstances surrounding how Andrew ended up in the river remain unknown.

Described by his family as a “lovely man” battling depression, Andrew had also suffered a stroke a year before his disappearance. On the night he went missing, Andrew left behind his house keys, wallet, and even his false teeth. He was last seen wearing a dark brown coat, blue jeans, and black boots, but tragically, he did not take his medication with him.
The coroner, Graeme Hughes, stated that the post-mortem examination couldn’t determine a medical cause of death. The lack of evidence has left many questions unanswered about how Andrew came to be in the water.
Andrew’s family had issued pleas for his whereabouts, expressing their fears due to the cold weather and his health condition. As the community reflects on this tragic event, we’re reminded of the importance of supporting those battling mental health issues.
Stories like Andrew’s highlight the vital role inquests play in providing clarity and potentially preventing similar tragedies in future.
