Bar’s Operating Hours Reduced Amid Accusations of Connection to Increase in Violent Incidents

A Newport pub, the Ship and Pilot, has been told to cut its hours after a “violent altercation” reportedly broke out, leaving a blood trail on the street. This incident involved “six to eight” people at around 1am on October 26. Newport’s licensing committee heard that some individuals were allegedly seen searching for glass bottles in recycling containers to use as weapons. One man ended up at the Royal Gwent Hospital with a significant slash injury to his arm.

Earlier in July, police were called about a person allegedly possessing a knife inside the pub, though a search revealed nothing. A man claimed he’d been punched, but no further details were provided. CCTV footage? Not available, according to the pub, due to technical issues.

With these violent occurrences raising concerns, the council initially considered revoking or suspending the pub’s licence. However, after discussions with the pub’s solicitor, a compromise was reached. Now, the pub must close its alcohol sales by midnight and adhere to stricter licensing conditions.

Residents of Pill expect security, and these events have sparked significant concern. Police officer PC Mark Williams highlighted a “direct link to violent disorder and a failure to cooperate with police.”

Representing the pub’s licence holder, Ewen Macgregor pointed out that the Ship and Pilot is a small community hub, providing jobs and being one of the few remaining pubs in the area. He contested claims of non-cooperation, stating that the pub provided CCTV footage after October’s incident, albeit with technical difficulties.

The matter is now under stricter monitoring to ensure public safety and compliance with licensing rules. Residents can hope this brings a bit more peace to the neighbourhood.
