Naomi Durham’s life looked picture-perfect on the outside, but inside she was fighting a silent battle. After her second child, Naomi felt like she “didn’t need to be here anymore.” The mum from Cardiff struggled with postnatal depression, type one diabetes, and an eating disorder, facing stigma and isolation as she tried to seek help.

Despite what seemed like a strong support network, Naomi found herself shuffled between the mental health and diabetes teams with little progress. At her lowest, she felt completely alone, thinking her family would be better off without her.
Her turning point came thanks to Home Start Cymru, a charity providing much-needed emotional support. Naomi was paired with Hassana, a compassionate volunteer, who not only listened but also helped her regain her footing in life. With Hassana’s encouragement, Naomi found a job and returned to her nursing course, transforming her path.

“Home Start Cymru was instrumental in my recovery,” Naomi shares. “They were there when everyone else said no.” Her journey highlights the importance of reaching out for help and the incredible impact that compassion and understanding can have.
Naomi’s story is a reminder that even when life looks perfect on the outside, many are silently struggling. If you or someone you know is facing similar challenges, charities like Home Start Cymru can offer support and understanding when it feels like no one else can. Let’s speak up about postpartum struggles and ensure no one feels they have to face it alone.
