Nanabawa, originally from Newport and an alumnus of Caerleon Comprehensive School, had established himself as a respected figure both academically and professionally. Known for founding the executive recruitment agency Rec2Go in Gloucester, his professional accomplishments were matched by his personable nature and sporting prowess during his youth. Seven years ago, he married Hannaa, and together they were at the heart of various community and charitable activities.

Expressions of grief have poured in from all corners of Wales and beyond, with friends, former teachers, and local leaders describing the Nanabawas as an extraordinary family whose absence will be deeply felt. For many in Caerleon, remembering Akeel is to remember a source of laughter, generosity, and warmth at the core of their school days. One of his former teachers, James Savastano, recalled Akeel as a well-liked figure, talented on the rugby pitch and cricket field and someone who always had a good word for those around him.

“Akeel was a great personality, a model student more often than not. He was admired by his peers for his sporting ability and his great sense of humour,” said Mr Savastano, who added that Akeel and his brothers were all highly regarded during their time at the school. The sentiment was echoed by friends such as Ryan Lee James, who described Akeel as someone who “had time for everyone” and brightened the lives of those around him.

Tributes have not been limited to Caerleon or Newport. The profound sadness has extended to national figures and representatives. A spokesperson for Newport City Council extended sympathies to the bereaved families: “Our thoughts are with all loved ones at this terribly difficult time.” In a mark of respect, the flag at the Newport Civic Centre was flown at half-mast.

Newport City Councillor Farzina Hussain emphasised the outpouring of grief among residents, sharing that Akeel was remembered as “a kind and caring young man”. She highlighted the “kind words being shared across our community” as evidence of how deeply he and his family were valued.

At Sara’s primary school, headteacher and local imam Abdullah Samad remembered the young girl as a “ray of sunshine who lit up the classroom”. He spoke on behalf of the wider community, describing the Nanabawas as devoted parents and compassionate individuals, whose activism reached far beyond their immediate surroundings. The family regularly volunteered, advocated for humanitarian causes, and took part in fundraising efforts to support medical care in India and other causes.

Gloucestershire Muslim Bereavement Council expressed their devastation at the loss, acknowledging the overwhelming pain felt by so many who knew the Nanabawa family. “No words can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss, but we hope that cherished memories and the global outpouring of support may provide some solace,” they stated in an online post.

Air India has confirmed that flight AI171, scheduled to land at Gatwick, crashed with 242 people aboard—230 passengers and 12 crew members. According to official statements, only one person, a British national named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived and is now receiving hospital treatment. The incident is being described as one of the worst aviation disasters in recent years, with investigations ongoing.

As investigations continue and the community comes to terms with this tragic event, the outpouring of tributes highlights the significant positive impact Akeel, Hannaa, and Sara had on those around them. Their legacy of kindness, sporting achievement, and commitment to helping others will ensure their memory continues to inspire both in Newport and beyond.
